Twitter "Twayola" Is NKOTB's New Payola For Radio Stations!

SOURCE

Remember the days, when record companies use to slip a radio station a few extra hundred bucks to promote their favorite artist's latest record? The term, "payola" derived from that practice. Today, those pay-offs are being replaced by a new 21st century social media updated version.

Donnie Wahlberg and the New Kids on the Block put a new spin on that old formula. They alerted their fan base to accept a challenge to tweet the call letters of radio stations that would play Wahlberg's new single, "I Got it," also featuring Aubrey O'Day.

When any of the NKOTB band members send a shout-out (or tweet-out in this case) to their fans, affectionately called the "Blockheads," their fan base always rises to the occasion to do whatever bidding may be asked of them.

Back in April, I covered Jordan Knight's one-word tweet of "tink" that exploded onto the Twitterverse into a global frenzy of tens of thousands fans tweeting this word even though they had no idea what the word meant. Knight kept its meaning secret for over a week before he ran a contest for fans to determine the derivation of the word. Subsequently, "Tink before you tweet," became an inside joke for Blockheads worldwide, and t-shirts and other merchandise was sold online to support NKOTB's charity.

Fans can download the MP3 of Donnie's single which is packaged with Wahlberg's other cut called "Rise n Grind". Proceeds from these purchases go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and their continued fight against breast cancer.

Props to the NKOTB for continuing to use social media in interesting and unique ways to create excitement for theirAlice WillsonAlice Willson fans while spreading quickfire viral buzz for the band. (And a special shout-out to one of the Blockheads' most avid fans, Ms. Alice Willson (@dwsmillionthhug) for bringing this story to my attention.

Donnie's new single? Yup, I got it!

SOURCE

A few months after the New Kids On The Block wrapped up their "Full Service" summer tour, one of the New Kids has satiated fans' thirst for new music.

That's 'cause Donnie Wahlberg released his new single yesterday, "I Got It," which features former Danity Kane singer Aubrey O'Day. Toronto radio station CHUM FM world-premiered "I Got It" yesterday morning; and soon after that, Donnie tweeted his fans (like me) on how to purchase the song for download. Of course I bought it, not only 'cause it's a fun song but because some of the proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a foundation with which the New Kids have worked in the past.

As for the song itself (not to mention "Rise N Grind," the other single that came with "I Got It" for just $1.99), it's great to hear Donnie striking out on his own, making some super music. It's a nice way to transition into what might be a long time before the New Kids get back in the studio again.

The Wahlberg/O'Day pairing also works very well, and for me, it's a neat mixture, considering I saw both of them on the same bill last spring. At Z100's Zootopia 2008 (at which I actually met Donnie and the rest of my favorite group), the New Kids made their first actual concert appearance after Danity Kane, the product of MTV's "Making the Band 3," took the stage to perform their hit at the time, "Damaged." In the year-plus since, Aubrey (seen here with Donnie at the premiere of his film, "A Righteous Kill," last September) has left Danity Kane, while the New Kids put together a pair of successful tours — their 2008 reunion tour, followed up by "Full Service."

Donnie Wahlberg, Aubrey O’Day new song debuts

Twitter enthusiast Donnie Wahlberg debuted his new single I Got It, featuring Aubrey O’Day, on CHUMFM radio this morning. What do you think? It sounds cute enough, and peppered with nods to Twitter. Is that a first in the music world? I can’t think of any other song that shouts out Twitter. I’m not sure what Donnie’s talking about, but he took to his Twitter page and had this to say on partnering with Aubrey O’Day:

Aubrey was “repping The Block” in her lyrics if you didn’t catch it! Don’t sleep. She brought it for the BH’s!!!! Real talk!
